Frequently asked questions

Trying a class
Do I need any experience to start?
No. Beginners are welcome at any session, and your first class is free. Just wear loose, comfortable clothing.
What should I bring to my first class?
Just wear loose, comfortable clothing like a t-shirt and track pants. No gi is needed to start. Bring a water bottle, and note we train in bare feet, so no shoes are needed on the mat. Arrive about 10 minutes early so we can say hello and get you set up.
How long is a class?
It depends on the age group. MonStars run 45 minutes, Juniors an hour, and Seniors an hour and a half.
Is there a girls-only class?
Yes. Judo 4 Girls runs weekly and is open to all ages. Come along to it for your free trial, or to any class that suits your age.
Can I stay and watch?
Absolutely, and we encourage it. Parents are welcome to stay and watch the whole class.
Can I come to more than one trial class?
Often, yes, especially for children. Little ones can be shy on their first night, and some do not step on the mat at all, so we are relaxed about letting them ease in over a couple of visits. Adults usually only need one, but we are happy to make exceptions.
Joining & membership
How do I join?
Come along for a trial class first. Once you have trained with us, you can pick a plan and become a member, either through your member account or by asking a coach.
How are fees paid?
Casual training is paid per class. Foundation and Unlimited memberships are billed monthly by direct debit through Ezidebit.
Do you offer family discounts?
Yes. Immediate family on the Unlimited plan pay a household rate: $165 a month for two people, $190 for three, and $200 for four or more.
Do I need a judo gi, and where do I get one?
Not for your first classes. Loose, comfortable clothes are fine to start. When you are ready, you will need a judo gi, which you can buy through the club shop, and we will help you get the right size.
Do I have to compete?
Not at all. Competing is completely optional. Plenty of our members never compete and train purely for fitness, confidence and fun. If you or your child ever want to give it a go, we will support you.
Do I need to register with Judo Queensland?
You can start classes without it, but you will need it to grade, to enter official competitions, or to be covered by Judo Australia's insurance. Judo Queensland set their own annual fee, currently around $100 for juniors and $150 for adults, and we will help you register when you want it.
How much do gradings cost?
Grading fees are $25 for juniors and $40 for seniors. Gradings are by invitation only; you must be a Judo Queensland member and meet the RHS grading policy.
Can I pause or cancel my membership?
Yes. We ask for one month of notice. As we bill monthly, that usually just means you finish the month you are in and are not charged for the next.
